Cleveland Cavaliers to name Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse TV studio/media workroom after Fred McLeod

CLEVELAND, Ohio — As a way to honor him for his impact, the Cleveland Cavaliers will name the media space at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse after Fred McLeod, the 14-year TV play-by-play announcer who passed away unexpectedly on Sept. 9.

The Fred McLeod TV Studio and Media Workroom, which was recently revamped and expanded as part of the arena’s transformation project, is where home and visiting team media members gather before and after games to hear from — and interview — the Cavaliers head coach. The space is also used for many other media events and reporting elements throughout the year by media members who are there to cover games and events for newspapers, magazines, television, radio, websites and other digital platforms.

“The Fred McLeod TV Studio and Media Workroom will be a lasting tribute to someone that was universally admired, respected and appreciated as a fellow media member and willing mentor to a countless number across the industry,” the Cavaliers wrote in a statement announcing the honor.

Scrimmage will be held at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse on Oct. 8 at 5 p.m.

Traditionally, the exhibition is the first look at the new team, with the game taking place prior to the preseason opener. However, because of scheduling conflicts at the revamped arena, this year’s intrasquad scrimmage will be the day after the first preseason matchup against San Lorenzo de Almagro of Argentina’s Liga Nacional de Básquet.

Tickets for the Wine and Gold Scrimmage are once again free. They are currently available at any of Discount Drug Mart’s northeast Ohio locations or online at Cavs.com. The Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse box office is temporarily closed through late September to complete the venue’s transformation. There is a limit of six tickets per transaction and seating will be general admission. Fans 17 years of age and under must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
